• Duchess Kate and Prince William skipping this year's BAFTAs
  • The royal couple were previously expected to attend
  • Prince William is president of the British awards ceremony

Duchess Kate and Prince William won't be making a red carpet appearance at the BAFTAs this year! As Hello! shares, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have pulled out of attending the annual celebration of British films and television series just days before it will take place.

Duchess Kate and Prince William had "diary constraints"

Duchess Kate and Prince William's decision comes as a surprise since the BAFTAs will be held on Sunday at London's prestigious Royal Albert Hall. According to the outlet, William reportedly turned down the opportunity to attend due to "diary constraints." While it's unclear what exactly this means, it sounds as though a schedule conflict caused the royal to decline.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are known to attend the BAFTAs together, with William traditionally delivering a speech to the audience at the end of the show. However, this will be the second year in a row William and Kate have been absent from the ceremony for an unexpected reason! As Hello! mentions, Prince Philip's death prevented even their virtual appearance in 2021.

William is president of the BAFTAs, and it's worth noting that critically-acclaimed Princess Diana biopic Spencer was shut out of contention. Even though Kate and William won't be attending the BAFTAs, perhaps we can hope for a red carpet appearance from Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry later this month, as the couple could possibly attend the Oscars!
