- Rachel Zegler says she isn't invited to the 2022 Oscars
- She starred in West Side Story, up for seven awards
- Zegler also won a Golden Globe as the lead "Maria"
West Side Story is up for seven awards, including Best Picture, at this year's Oscars. But the film's star Rachel Zegler says she isn't invited to the ceremony on March 27. Weird, right?
Zegler's reveal came on Instagram, where a screenshot (via THR) shows her telling a fan about Oscars night: "I will root for West Side Story from my couch and be proud of the work we so tirelessly did 3 years ago. I hope some last-minute miracle occurs and I can celebrate our film in person but hey, that's how it goes sometimes, I guess."
No Oscars for West Side Story star Rachel Zegler?
Rachel Zegler played the lead role of "Maria" in Steven Spielberg's celebrated West Side Story remake. Which makes it rather strange she won't be at the Oscars next weekend. Her fans and many social media users are outraged at the news.
But Zegler has responded with surprise at the passionate response on her behalf. On Twitter, she followed up by writing: "My goodness, folks!! appreciate all the support, i really really do. we live in such unprecedented times, and a lot of work behind the scenes goes into making movie magic happen.
"That goes for film productions (like the one I am so lucky to be currently shooting in london)… and awards shows alike. let’s all just respect the process and i'll get off my phone x R."
Also interesting:
It's all pretty unexpected, and you would think Steven Spielberg of all people might have some sway with the Academy. For West Side Story, Zegler even won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy.
But no invite is where Zegler's Oscars controversy stands for the moment. This'll be a storyline to watch heading into awards night.
West Side Story is up for Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actress (Ariana DeBose), Cinematography, Costume Design, Production Design, and Sound at the Oscars on March 27.
