- 'The Crown' is coming to its final Season 6
- Queen Elizabeth's death changed producers' plans
- THIS is what the show creator had to say
Peter Morgan, the mind behind the show, explained to 'Variety' magazine in a new interview that he was compelled to change direction with the hit television show as a result of the Queen’s death. The news changed the plans of everyone whose life revolved around the royal family.
"We'd all been through the experience of the funeral. So because of how deeply everybody will have felt that, I had to try and find a way in which the final episode dealt with the character’s death, even though she hadn’t died yet," Peter said.
Elizabeth's passing opened up a can of worms
'The Crown' has now charted the lives of key figures in the British royal family over the course of multiple decades. The hit Netflix series is now gearing up for the release of what is confirmed to be its last season. It has been a staple in fictional journalism, as fans have gotten some unprecedented looks inside the palace.
Netflix chief Ted Sarandos said that initial discussions included debates on whether they should end the show with the Queen’s death, but then she ultimately outlived their intended production length. The decision was made to end the program's timeline in 2005, as they felt, "It was the cutoff to keep it historical, not journalistic."
That was probably a good idea, as recent history is still fresh in many minds. "I think by stopping almost 20 years before the present day, it’s dignified," Sarandos added. At the end of Season 5, viewers saw the months preceding Princess Diana's death, the upcoming season is set to largely pick up where things left off, depicting events between 1997 and 2005.
This is when Diana began her involvement with Dodi Fayed. Alongside her time with the Fayeds, we'll also see Diana's humanitarian work, namely her visits to Bosnia and Angola shortly before her death in 1997.
Also interesting:
Season 6 will be released in two batches, with the first to explore the lead up to and aftermath of Princess Diana's death, who is played in the show by Elizabeth DeBicki. Morgan has already confirmed that Diana's death will not be depicted on screen.
While many questions remain about the second batch of episodes, it has been confirmed that Prince William and Prince Harry will be included in season 6. The storyline involving an older William will include his meeting of Kate Middleton Meg Bellamy and their early courtship.
The first drop of episodes will examine the relationship between Diana and Dodi Fayed ahead of their fatal car crash in Paris. For many, the reliving the events will be traumatic. This means that producers must stay as true to life as possible. All in all, they have managed to steer the ship in the right direction.
We can't wait to see the entirety of the final season play out. Catch 'The Crown' on Netflix today.
