Prince William's initial reaction to Oprah with Meghan and Harry has been revealed in a new report. This weekend, The Sunday Times spoke to close friends of the Duke of Cambridge, who reported that he was "reeling" after Prince Harry made a range of shocking revelations as well as comments about William himself in the interview.
Prince William: Harry was "way off the mark" in Oprah interview
The Times report says that Prince William specifically took issue with Harry calling him "trapped" in the royal system due to his place in line to the throne. Harry had described to Oprah that he was able to step away from the monarchy, but, he added, "My father and my brother are trapped. They don't get to leave, and I have huge compassion for that."
William reportedly felt this comment was "way off the mark." A source added that his "head is all over the place" on what was said in the whole of the interview, which included serious allegations of racism against the Royal Family and the institution's alleged refusal of mental health assistance for Meghan in a time of need.
Prince William was first royal to comment on racism claims
Publicly, Prince William was also the first royal to address the interview shortly after it aired. After attending an engagement, he told a reporter that the royals are "very much not a racist family" and added that he'd be speaking to his brother soon.
But that first talk after the interview was apparently "not productive," according to Gayle King, who had personally been in touch with the Sussexes after Harry spoke to his father and brother on the phone.
Despite the fallout from the Oprah interview, it's been reported that William still intends to reunite with his brother this July, when Harry will return to the UK to unveil a statue of Princess Diana at Kensington Palace.
