The Umbrella Academy soundtrack easily makes the series one of the most unique and exciting shows out right now. The kooky tunes are always perfectly fitting to the incredibly strange and silly situations the "Hargreeves" family get themselves into.
The Umbrella Academy Soundtrack
The songs behind The Umbrella Academy vary across different genres and decades using incredibly famous rock songs like Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now" or one-hit wonders like Tiffany's "I Think We're Alone Now". Many times they are obscure and unexpected choices like They Might Be Giants' "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" playing while "Five" takes out dozens of bad guys violently and effortlessly or the Backstreet Boys' "Everybody" booming while "Klaus" wrestles his ghost brother "Ben".
According to Den of Geek, Steve Blackman said "Music is such an important thing to me and I really take time to pick the songs. We do things differently on the show. Most shows finish the scene, the shooting, and then they add the music afterwards. I pick the songs mostly ahead of time. I put them in the scripts. Sometimes I even hear a song and then I decide what scene I want to write with that song in my mind."
Many scenes in The Umbrella Academy seem tailor-made for the song because they are! Steve explained that along with his composer Jeff Russo, "I sometimes will be listening to a song and then I imagine a scene. Very early on, I'm thinking, 'I want to put this song over a fight scene,' and I work that into the script - which is often backward. A lot of people add music after the fact. I work the opposite way."
