Amazon has ordered a new adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Their reported new project will be a standalone TV series that centres on the "Lisbeth Salander" character, who comes from the Millennium crime novels by Swedish author Stieg Larsson.
Variety exclusively broke the news on Tuesday.

Amazon's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo TV series
Amazon's new TV series will go with the title The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. But it will not be a direct adaptation of any of Larsson's books or a remake of previous films.
According to Variety, it will "take Salander and place her in today’s world with a wholly new setting, new characters, and a new story."
No names are attached to direct or star in the project at this time, but the role as hacker "Lisbeth Salander" should be a coveted one, as it was when Hollywood first adapted the series in 2011.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo movie adaptations
Previously, there were plans to adapt the Millennium trilogy (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest) with Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig in the leading roles.
But only the first film, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, came to fruition with director David Fincher in 2011. It was well-received, and Mara got an Oscar nomination for her performance, but the production of a sequel stalled in its early stages.
A loose sequel titled The Girl in the Spider's Web did come out in 2018, but it featured a different cast and creative team. The original novel trilogy was also adapted earlier in Swedish with Noomi Rapace as "Salander."
