David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are no longer writing and producing the new Star Wars trilogy. The former showrunners of HBO's flagship show Game of Thrones decided to focus on their upcoming Netflix projects instead. Benioff and Weiss released a statement that read as follows:

"We love Star Wars. When George Lucas built it, he built us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything. But there are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects. So we are regretfully stepping away."

"The saga will end, the story lives forever..."

The new movie series was first announced in 2018 and the news that Weiss and Benioff were attached broke in Spring of 2019. The new trilogy was supposed to tackle a new part of the Star Wars universe, separating the movies from the "Skywalker" saga that started out with A New Hope and will be concluded with the release of The Rise of Skywalker on December 20, 2019.

The first of the new movies is scheduled to be released on December 16, 2022, with the other two films in line to drop in 2024 and 2026. At the moment, it remains unclear whether this release schedule is still realistic...
