- 'NCIS: Origins' is soon to be shown on American TV
- Austin Stowell portrays the new "Gibbs"
- What Mark Harmon thinks about the actor
In 2003, Mark Harmon created one of the most popular characters on television with "Leroy Jethro Gibbs" on 'NCIS'. Now he returns with a new prequel series 'NCIS: Origins', behind the camera as both executive producer and narrator.
Mark Harmon is also set to appear in the first episode. This is the first time the actor has appeared as "Gibbs" since leaving 'NCIS' in 2021.
Mark Harmon on his "Gibbs" successor Austin Stowell
Austin Stowell will play the young "Gibbs" from 1991 in the prequel series. Mark Harmon describes to 'People' the moment Austin Stowell entered the room:
"I felt the room jump a little when Austin came in before he said anything," says Mark Harmon. After his audition, the actor remembers, "He walked out and someone said, ‘I'll just say it, that's a movie star.’"
Austin Stowell admits to 'People' that he has "never been on a show like this." Mark Harmon remembers the other actors who auditioned for the role, "there were a lot of good people. I would say that there were really few who drew the attention Austin did."
The series follows "Gibbs'" beginnings as a special agent at 'NCIS Camp Pendleton', under the direction of "Mike Franks", played by Kyle Schmid. Other cast members include Diany Rodriguez, Mariel Molino and Bobby Moynihan.
Austin Stowell has nothing but praise for Mark Harmon and his 'Origins' colleagues and crew. "It gives me great purpose. I don't just go to work for me, I go to work with everyone. It's the opportunity of a lifetime. I love it."
And he adds: "The fact that I know that there's 300 million [NCIS fans] out there who are waiting to see what this is only makes me fight harder and make me want to fulfill their expectations." 'NCIS: Origins' premiered on October 14 on CBS.
