For over 15 years, Grey's Anatomy has been intertwining medical drama with the personal lives of doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. In season 16, another twist came when "Dr. Alex Karev" (Justin Chambers) shockingly left his wife "Jo" (Camille Luddington) for his ex "Izzie" (Katherine Heigl) and their children.
Luddington, who stars as "Jo," has now revealed how her role will continue in season 17 without "Alex." And, as it turns out, the actress is on board with how the exit was handled.
"It did feel like probably the only way that [Alex] would leave her, I couldn't really imagine another way," Luddington told Good Housekeeping. "So in order for them to break up, it, to me, did make sense, even though it was really shocking."
Grey's Anatomy season 17: How "Jo" will go on without "Alex"
Luddington believes "Jo" will bounce back stronger on Grey's in the face of adversity. She also shared what's next for her character, saying "Jo" will face many challenges in the new season.
"You do see that 'Jo' has moments where she doesn't want to go to work," she said. "She finds it really difficult, stressful, and depressing. She struggles and she's looking for comfort, and I think she's also looking for friendship this season."
Grey's Anatomy: New romance between "Jo" and "Jackson"?
Spoilers ahead: In season 17, "Jo" seeks solace with "Jackson Avery" (Jesse Williams), and the doctor and the head of plastic surgery even have a one-night stand. However, the little adventure ends with "Jo" bursting into tears.
While fans speculate that a romance could be brewing, the "Jo" actress thinks that this could be the beginning of a good friendship.
This is what Camilla Luddington wishes for "Jo"
"I feel like I'm rooting for 'Jo' to move on and find her true love — her person!" the actress revealed. If it were up to the 36-year-old, "Jo's" story would end with her getting everything she always wanted.
"So I would like to see her happy with a partner, whoever that is... and maybe some kids," Luddington concluded.
Grey's Anatomy airs Thursdays on ABC, with episode 4 of season 17 coming on Dec. 3. Watch for the latest return of a former cast member!
