'All In The Family': The Cast Now

All in the Family was the biggest sitcom of the 1970s and is still one of TV's all-time great comedies. It aired nine seasons on CBS (1971-1979), starring Carroll O'Connor and Jean Stapleton as the "Bunkers," Sally Struthers as daughter "Gloria" and Rob Reiner as her husband "Mike 'Meathead' Stivic."

The show was famous for its infusion of contemporary social issues into a family comedy. It also featured stars Sherman Hemsley, Isabel Sanford, and Mike Evans as the neighbouring "Jeffersons," who later starred in their own spin-off. What happened to the stars of All in the Family? All in the Family birthed one of TV's all-time icons in "Archie Bunker." The patriarch was known for his stubborn and argumentative ways, often being called a "loveable bigot." Actor Carroll O'Connor played the role, which later earned the top spot on Bravo's 100 Greatest TV Characters list.

Following All in the Family, O'Connor reprised his best-known role in Archie Bunker's Place for another four seasons (1979-1983). The star later showed off his range in crime drama In the Heat of the Night (1988-1995) and returned to comedy on Mad About You in the late '90s. In 2001, the TV icon sadly passed away at age 76 from a heart attack.

"Edith Bunker" was known as the kind-hearted but often-putdown wife of "Archie." Forever by her husband's side despite their differences, "Edith" was portrayed by veteran actress Jean Stapleton.

When All in the Family returned as Archie Bunker's Place, Stapleton made guest appearances only in season 1. Afterward, she requested to be written out — and she was, as "Edith" was said to have died on the show.

From the 1980s onward, Stapleton continued with TV and film roles, picking up a Golden Globe nomination for Fire in the Dark (1991) and an Emmy nomination for Grace Under Fire (1994). Her final roles came in 2001, and the star later passed in 2013 at age 90.

Showing qualities of both her parents, "Gloria" was the daughter of the "Bunkers." Played by Sally Struthers, she was married to "Mike Stivic," whose clashes with "Archie" were a routine plot on the show.

Struthers returned occasionally for Archie Bunker's Place and even played her role in a short-lived spin-off, Gloria (1982-1983). But since then, the in-demand actress has had many TV, film and stage parts, perhaps most notably on Gilmore Girls and as a voice actress on Dinosaurs and Talespin.

Today, Struthers is 73 years old and continues to act. She's due to appear in an upcoming TV series titled In-Security.

And married to "Gloria" was "Michael 'Mike' Stivic," who "Archie" preferred to call "Meathead." Actor and filmmaker Rob Reiner played the hippie who tirelessly debated with his father-in-law.

Since All in the Family, Rob Reiner has become better known as a director, a role which he's taken to successfully. Among his titles are Misery, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, and classic music mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap—which he also wrote.

Today, Reiner is 73 years old, and he continues to act, produce, and direct. He had a busy 2020, acting in The Good Fight and miniseries Hollywood.

Little "Stephanie Mills" joined All in the Family in season 9 and stayed on for most of Archie Bunker's Place in the '80s. She was a relative of "Edith's" whom the "Bunkers" adopted after she was left on their doorstep. Actress Danielle Brisebois played the fan-favourite youngster.
