The 2020 JUNO Awards have officially been cancelled due to ongoing concerns over the coronavirus. Originally set to take place in Saskatchewan, Alberta on March 15th, the JUNO Awards broke the news on Twitter today that the awards ceremony won't be going ahead as planned because they're prioritizing the health and safety of all involved. Alessia Cara was set to host this year's event, which would also see Jann Arden being inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

"Through our collaborative discussions and with input and guidance and the full support of our trusted partners, including the Province of Saskatchewan, the City of Saskatoon, Tourism Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Health Authority and Saskatchewan Ministry of Health, it is with an incredibly heavy heart that we collectively confirm the cancellation of the 49th annual Juno Awards and Juno Week activities in Saskatoon due to concerns surrounding COVID-19," the joint statement begins.

JUNO Awards on cancellation: "We know this is the right decision"

The JUNO Awards statement goes on to mention how even though they're "devastated" about having to cancel the event, they're confident that doing so is the right call given the current state of events in the world. "At this time of global uncertainty, the health, safety, and well-being of all Canadians must stand at the forefront of any decisions that impact our communities," the statement continues.

"We know this is the right decision based on the information we currently have and are continuing to receive. The situation surrounding COVID-19 continues to evolve rapidly and we urge everyone to follow the guidelines and protocols put forth by public health officials".

The statement ends by mentioning that "CARAS will continue to explore options to coordinate an alternative way" for honorees of the ceremony to be recognized. Many have already reacted to the news about the 2020 JUNO Awards cancellation on social media, including musicians Walk off the Earth and Saskatoon's mayor, Charlie Clark, who expressed their support for the decision. "This is sad as we were so excited about the show," Walk off the Earth said. "But we believe it is the right move. Safety first".
