Mike and Zara Tindall's 2011 wedding ruffled the feathers of some royal traditionalists.

The marriage, which united Princess Anne's daughter Zara Phillips and former rugby star Mike Tindall, was actually opposed by Mike's grandmother. According to Mike's father Philip Tindall, she was "dead against" the marriage, based on her view that royals should only marry other royals.

Mr. Tindall revealed his mother in-law's opposition to her grandson's royal wedding in a recent interview with The Sunday Times.

"Linda's mum was dead against it. In her day, royalty married royalty and she thought the wedding would be shunned," Philip Tindall told the outlet.

The story features an unfortunate twist of fate as well: Mike's grandmother passed away before she was ever able to meet Zara. But Philip Tindall knows that his mother in-law would have approved wholeheartedly of Zara as a person.

"I know she'd have loved her as much as we do because she and Mike are perfect for each other," Philip added.

Although Zara's wedding to Mike went outside of royalty, the Queen did give her consent to her granddaughter's 2011 marriage — just a few months after Prince William was similarly given consent to marry Kate Middleton.

Mike, 41, and Zara, 39, celebrate their ninth wedding anniversary today, June 30. They were married on June 30, 2011, in a ceremony at Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh. The married couple of nine years also shares daughters Mia, 6, and Lena, 2, together.
