Today, Friday May 8, 2020, marks the 75th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) and the end of World War II in Europe. 75 years ago today, the then-prime minister Sir Winston Churchill announced that the fighting in Europe was over after Germany unconditionally surrendered.
The royal family was among the first to commemorate the special day on social media, with Duchess Kate and Prince William's Instagram account posting a number of amazing throwback pictures taken on May 8, 1945 in London. We also get a glimpse of Queen Elizabeth II in uniform back in 1945.
The Queen will speak at 9pm BST
The official Twitter account of the royal family posted a picture of King George VI with an excerpt from the speech he gave on May 8 which you can listen to below. It was also announced on the Twitter feed that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II "will make a special address at 9pm [BST], the exact time her father spoke 75 years ago."
The celebrations for VE Day this year will be quite limited, as the United Kingdom is still in lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The BBC will be airing a number of special programmes to mark the day, including a re-broadcast of Sir Winston Churchill's speech on May 8, 1945.
