It's now been five months since Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan sat down with Oprah Winfrey for their controversial tell-all interview.

But there's been virtually no news on how the royals are handling the fallout from the interview and its damaging accusations. Now, it turns out the Duke and Duchess nearly went a step further and named names on their claim of racism during the TV special.

Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan's interview with Oprah

This week, an excerpt from a new version of the unauthorized Harry and Meghan biography Finding Freedom was previewed in the Daily Mail, and it gets into what almost happened in the Oprah interview.

You'll remember that, in the interview, Harry and Meghan said a member of the Royal Family allegedly made a racist comment about the colour of Archie's skin before he was born.

The Sussexes ultimately refused to name the family member. But the new Finding Freedom excerpt says the couple considered "sharing this detail," according to the Daily Mail preview.

In the Oprah interview, which was even nominated for an Emmy, Meghan instead said "it would be very damaging" to that royal to identify them. So it's unclear what made them change their minds.

Finding Freedom update: Oprah interview, Prince Philip funeral

A range of additional subjects are expected to be covered in the new edition of Finding Freedom by Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durande, which is due out on Aug. 31.

It will discuss the funeral of Prince Philip, when Prince Harry traveled to London from his new home in California to attend the memorial service. Duchess Meghan did not accompany her husband at the time as she was pregnant with her daughter.

The new book edition could another stir, but Harry and Meghan have always emphasized that the book is unauthorized and they did not collaborate with its authors.

The Palace hasn't yet followed up its initial statement about the Oprah interview, where they said they will investigate the claims of racism but that "recollections may vary."

Just one royal insider has put their name behind a claim of which royal allegedly made the racist remarks about Archie: Lady Colin Campbell suggested it was Princess Anne, but described the incident as a misunderstanding exaggerated by Harry and Meghan.
