On Monday October 7th, King Carl Gustaf of Sweden surprisingly announced in a statement on the official palace website that Princess Madeleine and Prince Carl Philip's children are no longer part of the royal family. Madeleine and her brother Carl Philip have opened up on Instagram to share their thoughts on the decision.

The announcement from the palace stated that the children of Princess Madeleine and Chris O'Neill, and Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia, are no longer official members of the royal house. This means that they are no longer expected to perform official royal duties moving forward.

Big Changes In The Swedish Royal Family

"His Majesty The King has decided on changes to The Royal House. The purpose of these changes is to establish which members of The Royal Family may be expected to perform official duties incumbent on the Head of State or related to the function of the Head of State," the palace statement read.

"Positive" Changes for Their Children

Both Princess Madeleine and Prince Carl Philip shared their positive thoughts regarding the news on Instagram. Madeleine saying that she thinks "it's good that our children are now getting a greater opportunity to shape their own lives as private individuals" and Carl Philip saying that, "we see this as positive as Alexander and Gabriel will have freer choices in life."

The succession of the Swedish royals to the throne is not affected by this change. Nevertheless, this announcement brings about major changes. The children of Madeleine and Carl Philip, when they are older, can no longer perform tasks on behalf of the royal family. This is now, in addition to their parents, reserved solely for the King, Queen, and Princess Victoria's family.
