- The event will be held in Cape Town
- He'll have a 'Super Bowl' moment
Prince William, the Prince of Wales, is gearing up for a momentous occasion as he prepares to attend the Earthshot Prize Awards in Cape Town. This visit marks his first official trip to South Africa since 2010 and his first to the African continent since 2018, when he toured Namibia, Tanzania, and Kenya. The four-day solo journey is set to be a "Super Bowl moment" for the Prince, with this year's awards ceremony surpassing all previous efforts.
Engaging with young environmental leaders
Kicking off on Monday, Prince William will engage with young environmentalists from Africa and Southeast Asia participating in the inaugural Earthshot Prize Climate Leaders Youth Programme. This initiative aims to empower the next generation of environmental champions and foster innovative solutions to pressing ecological challenges.
On the second day of his visit, Prince William will hold an audience with South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa. He will also participate in a fireside chat during Earthshot+ Day and attend the United for Wildlife Global Summit. The Prince, who established the organization in 2013 to combat illegal wildlife trade, is expected to deliver a landmark speech addressing nature, the environment, and his support for wildlife rangers.
The grand Earthshot Prize Awards ceremony
The highlight of Prince William's visit will be the Earthshot Prize Awards, held in a bespoke eco-dome powered by renewable energy from a local wind farm. The ceremony will be a star-studded affair, featuring supermodels Heidi Klum and Winnie Harlow, alongside award-winning actor and singer Billy Porter and TV presenter Bonang Matheba. Special performances will include Afrobeats sensation Davido, Tanzanian artist Diamond Platnumz, DJ Uncle Waffles, and Grammy Award winner Lebo M.
In a groundbreaking move, the awards will be broadcast live through a partnership with YouTube and across 50 African countries via the Multichoice network. This unprecedented coverage aims to amplify the message of sustainability and innovation on a global scale.
Sustainability will take center stage on the green carpet, with Prince William expected to don a ten-year-old dark green blazer by Alexander McQueen, echoing his commitment to sustainable fashion. Hannah Jones, CEO of the Earthshot Prize, emphasized the importance of sustainable fashion, stating, "We're going to be shining a light on sustainable fashion throughout the week."

The Earthshot Prize and its global impact
The Earthshot Prize, inspired by John F. Kennedy's Moonshot project, challenges innovators worldwide to develop solutions for pressing environmental issues. The awards recognize achievements in five categories: protecting and restoring nature, cleaning our air, reviving our oceans, building a waste-free world, and fixing our climate. Each finalist stands to receive a £1 million prize to further their groundbreaking initiatives.
The Earthshot Prize holds special significance for Prince William, as his 2018 visit to Namibia inspired its creation. A Kensington Palace spokesperson explained, "It was a trip to Namibia in September 2018 that the Prince of Wales was inspired by projects which were working to protect the environment and support local communities."
