Prince Harry has explained how his upbringing motivated him to step away from royal life.
The Duke appeared today on Dax Shepard and Monica Padman's Armchair Expert podcast. In the 90-minute episode, he spoke on mental health and gave a new and candid version of how parenting factored in to his move to the US.
Prince Harry on Prince Charles and royal parenting
After Prince Harry explained how royal life impacted his mental well-being, Padman asked if he is "trying to parent in the opposite direction" from how he was raised.
Harry answered, "Isn't life about breaking the cycle, right? There's no blame. I don't think we should be pointing the finger or blaming anybody.
"But certainly when it comes to parenting," Harry continued, "if I've experienced some form of pain or suffering because of the pain or suffering that my father or my parents had suffered, I'm going to make sure I break that cycle, so that I don't pass it on."
The Duke said he eventually became aware of events that shaped parenting strategies in the Royal Family, seeming to specifically reference Prince Charles's unpleasant experience at a tough boarding school in his youth.
Harry said, "Okay, so this is where he went to school, this is what happened, I know this bit about his life. I also know that's connected to his parents.
"So that means he's treating me the way he was treated, which means, how can I change that for my own kids?
"I've now moved my whole family to the US — that wasn't the plan. But sometimes you've got to make decisions and put your family first and your mental health first," Harry said.
Prince Harry's episode of Dax Shepard's podcast
The parenting discussion was just one moment in a nearly 90-minute conversation with Prince Harry on Thursday's episode of Armchair Expert.
Harry's comments on his upbringing come after he spoke in his Oprah Winfrey interview about strained relations with Prince Charles amid stepping back from royal life. He also described his father as "trapped" in the royal system during that interview.
The pair have since reunited, albeit under unfortunate circumstances, at the funeral of Prince Philip last month.
