President Joe Biden's meeting with the Queen may not have gone as well as it appeared.
The US president met Queen Elizabeth on Sunday in the UK, and the occasion was largely well-received. However, President Biden has since been accused of breaking two rules for meeting the Queen.
President Joe Biden broke rules meeting Queen Elizabeth
According to one royal expert, Biden made a bad first impression with the Queen. The reason? He didn't remove his sunglasses when he arrived and first greeted the monarch.
"If you're meeting the Queen face-to-face there's no sunglasses or anything like that at all because eye contact is quite important with any introduction," Grant Harrold told Newsweek.
Harrold, a former royal butler, added: "Everyone else has to, it doesn't matter who you are, even royals remove sunglasses when they meet royals."
It was a sunny evening in Windsor on Sunday, and Biden only removed his trademark aviator sunglasses when he left the Queen's side to inspect the Guard of Honour.
President Biden's second etiquette violation
In addition, President Biden was accused of another etiquette violation: for revealing the contents of his private conversation with Queen Elizabeth.
Before departing from Windsor, Biden told reporters that the Queen privately asked him about Russia's Vladimir Putin and China's Xi Jinping.
Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told Daily Mail that Biden's move was a "breach of trust," as audiences with the Queen are "strictly private."
There is debate on if this protocol is outdated, but the expert still said it was "surprising" that the president quickly told the media about the Queen's questions, especially as they related to politics.
President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden were in the UK last week for the 2021 G7 Summit. They briefly met the Queen at a reception on Friday before visiting Windsor Castle for tea on Sunday night.
