Meghan Markle's legal team is seeking Associated Newspapers Limited to pay The Duchess's legal fees and print a front-page apology after a judge ruled in her favour in a privacy lawsuit last month.
Meghan Markle seeks legal fees, statement in court win
Her lawyers made the requests in High Court on Tuesday and reports say the costs register at £1.5 million ($2.6 million) while the statement would confirm her victory and "act as a deterrent to future infringers." It would run on the front page of The Mail on Sunday and for "no less than six months" on the home page of MailOnline.
In addition, Meghan's team sought an order to have physical copies of the letter at the centre of the case returned and electronic copies destroyed, according to Hello! Back on Feb. 11, The Duchess of Sussex won her case without a trial when a judge ruled that ANL violated her privacy by publishing in The Mail on Sunday excerpts of a private letter she'd written to her father in 2018.
Meghan and Harry are calling out the British tabloids
In a statement made upon winning the case last month, Meghan said she was "grateful" that the paper was held accountable for its "illegal and dehumanizing practices." Now distanced from the Royal Family, Meghan and her husband Prince Harry have been getting increasingly vocal about their contempt for British tabloids and their damaging strategies.
Last week, Harry told James Corden that such outlets were "destroying" his mental health and greatly contributed to his stepping back from royal duties. Expect the couple to address the topic further in their upcoming tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey.
