Meghan Markle did something pretty remarkable during a recent charity visit!
As People reports, Meghan and Harry visited Homeboy Industries on June 23. As the organization's founder shared, while volunteering with those in the program, Meghan ended up speaking to one of the participants in Spanish!
Meghan learned Spanish in Argentina after graduating university
Meghan's demonstration of her Spanish skills came as a surprise to those who were present. "She spoke Spanish perfectly with one young woman," Father Greg Boyle, the founder of Homeboy Industries, told People in an exclusive interview. "She just went right into Spanish, which was a revelation — and it was very good."
As People mentions, Meghan double-majored in theatre and international studies at Northwestern University. She then learned Spanish while interning at the U.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Meghan told Boyle she wanted "to come and put an apron on"
Meghan and Harry "were completely engaged and very informal" during their visit to the facility, according to Boyle. He revealed that the effort was organized when Meghan contacted him not long after the murder of George Floyd.
"She didn’t want to have a long-table discussion or presentation or even a tour," Boyle explained to People. "They knew we pivoted our organization to help address food insecurity in the county and that was intriguing to her, so she said, 'We want to come and put an apron on,' and that’s what they did. It was quite wonderful."
People mentions that during Meghan and Harry's visit to Homeboy Industries, the couple wore masks, gloves, and hairnets while they baked croissants and other items for the community. "Meghan is quite good at it — and Harry probably less so!" Boyle said.
Meghan and Harry would "always find their way" to one another
Meghan and Boyle have known each other for years, and she even learned a tamale recipe from him that— according to Boyle— she just might cook for Harry!
"We were joking about that and she said, ‘I don’t even think Harry even had a tamale before!’ So maybe she will make it for him," he revealed to People.
"A couple of times they’d be separated at one table or another, but then they’d always find their way to each other," Boyle said of the couple. "It was just sweet. They seem to have a good time together. We all felt special that they chose to come to our place."
