Meghan Markle was 1 of the 41,000 ITV viewers to complain after Piers Morgan cast doubt on her mental health struggles.
The Press Association today reported that the Duchess filed a complaint to the network after Morgan said he did not "believe a word" she said in her interview with Oprah Winfrey. But, rather than Morgan's full attack on her character, Meghan's complaint reportedly specified the damaging effect that his words could have on others with mental health struggles.
Meghan Markle filed ITV complaint against Piers Morgan
Morgan received a wave of heavy criticism this week after his rant about the Duchess of Sussex following her and Prince Harry's interview with Oprah — which included Meghan discussing suicidal thoughts and struggles with seeking help for mental health after joining the Royal Family.
Over 40,000 viewers complained after Morgan's comments on Good Morning Britain, which also came while network ITV was running a mental health campaign. The next day, co-host Alex Beresford called out the remarks, and Morgan stormed off the live show, resigning later the same day.
Piers Morgan doubles down on not believing Meghan
On Tuesday, Morgan's first tweet following his GMB exit referenced a lesson from his late manager: "Trust your gut." He has since doubled down on his doubt of Meghan, writing: "I've had time to reflect on this opinion, and I still don't. If you did, OK. Freedom of speech is a hill I'm happy to die on. Thanks for all the love, and hate. I'm off to spend more time with my opinions."
In Oprah with Meghan and Harry, the Duchess had opened up about her mental health struggles while with the Royal Family, saying that she "didn't want to be alive anymore" due to relentless tabloid gossip, the inability to defend herself, and a lack of protection from the royals. Morgan was widely rebuked for his "all-encompassing" doubt of Meghan, especially given the sensitive nature of mental health.
