Duchess Meghan and Princess Eugenie have had a close friendship for years.

The Duchess revealed this in her interview with TV legend Oprah Winfrey earlier this year. The friendship actually began before Meghan met and married Eugenie's cousin, Prince Harry. So: How do the two know each other?

Meghan's friendship with Princess Eugenie came before Harry

In the interview, which even prompted a statement from the Queen, Oprah asked the Duchess about her first time meeting Queen Elizabeth. Meghan said it happened by chance while she was staying at Royal Lodge, where Princess Eugenie's family lives.

Meghan stated: "We were going for lunch at Royal Lodge... where other members of the family live, specifically Andrew and Fergie, and Eugenie and Beatrice would spend a lot of time there."

She continued: "Eugenie and I had known each other before I knew Harry, so that was comfortable."

For many, this news came as a surprise. Since Princess Eugenie and Prince Harry have a very close relationship, most fans assumed that Meghan met Eugenie through Harry.

In other circles, it's believed that the ladies met through the same mutual friend who brought Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry together on a blind date.

Precisely who that is remains a bit of a mystery, but a few commonly cited possibilities are their mutual friends Misha Nonoo or Violet von Westenholz.

Otherwise, it appears Meghan and Eugenie's first true meeting has never been disclosed.
