The Queen Mother died in her sleep at her Windsor residence, Royal Lodge, on March 30th, 2002. Buckingham Palace confirmed that her passing had occurred at 3:15 pm, with her daughter Queen Elizabeth II by her bedside.

Queen Elizabeth's statement following the death of her mother was a simple one, issued by a palace spokesman on her behalf. "The Queen, with the greatest sadness, has asked for the following announcement to be made immediately: her beloved mother, Queen Elizabeth, died peacefully in her sleep this afternoon at Royal Lodge, Windsor," it read according to Hello!. "Members of the royal family have been informed."
The statement went on to share how the Queen Mother's condition continued to decline after Christmas, during which she had experienced a "bad cough and chest infection" before addressing the circumstances of the Queen Mother's death.
