Despite losing in the 2020 U.S. presidential election, Donald Trump thinks he could defeat Meghan Markle if she were to run for president in 2024.
The former president joined Fox News for an interview on Tuesday night, when he was asked to respond to news that the Duchess of Sussex has reportedly been networking with "Democratic operatives" to prepare for a career in politics.
Donald Trump "hopes" Meghan Markle runs for president
On the rumour of Meghan running for president, Trump said: "Well, I hope that happens because if that happened I think I'd have an even stronger feeling toward running."
He continued, "I'm not a fan of hers. I think that what she talks about the Royal Family and the Queen — I happen to think, I know the Queen as you know, I met with the Queen and I think the Queen is a tremendous person and I am not a fan of Meghan."
Trump's response referenced his state visit to the UK in 2019, which was met with some controversy at the time. Tuesday's Fox News interview came after Trump has largely receded from the public eye, save for a CPAC 2021 appearance, following his defeat in the 2020 election and his acquittal on impeachment charges last month.
Is Duchess Meghan actually running for president in 2024?
The rumour of a Meghan Markle presidential run has come up from time to time, and it was reignited last week when Daily Mail reported that she's apparently been networking with "senior Democrats" and plans to use the "furore" surrounding the Oprah interview to "launch a political career." These details were attributed to a nameless source, said to be a "senior Labour figure with strong links to Washington."
Finding Freedom author Omid Scobie also previously said that Meghan "has her eyes on the U.S. presidency," but the Duchess herself has not confirmed any serious political aspirations for the near future. The next U.S. presidential election will be held in 2024.
