Prince William: Big plans for the monarchy
William has envisioned a significant reduction in the number of working royals. According to the Daily Mail's royal commentator Richard Eden, who cites inside sources, William is aiming for a European model of monarchy, similar to that of Sweden or Denmark.
Eden quotes a source who claims: "When the older members of the family retire, His Royal Highness won't be inviting anyone else to become working royals."
William is even considering whether his younger children, Princess Charlotte (9) and Prince Louis (6), should serve as working royals at all. Currently, William, his wife Princess Kate (42), Prince Edward (60), and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh (59), are the only four working royals under the age of 70.

However, these plans have not met with universal approval. William's aunt, Princess Anne (73), has already expressed her criticism of a slimmed-down monarchy. In an interview with CBC, she said: "Well, I think the ‘slimmed-down’ (monarchy) was said in a day when there were a few more people around to make that seem like a justifiable comment. I mean, it doesn’t sound like a good idea from where I’m standing, I have to say. I’m not quite sure what else, you know, we can do."
It will likely be a while before William can put his plans into practice. However, he is expected to have the support of his father. Charles' plan also aimed to reduce the number of active royals.
