King Charles (74) recently touched down in Kenya, marking his first trip to a Commonwealth country since his accession in September 2022. During a state banquet, he took a trip down memory lane, reminiscing about the deep ties his family has to the African nation.
A romantic Kenyan proposal
The highlight of his speech was the heartwarming tale of how his son, Prince William (41), proposed to Kate Middleton (41) in the picturesque landscapes of Kenya.
"It was here, in sight of Mount Kenya, that my son proposed to his wife, now my beloved daughter-in-law," King Charles revealed, taking us back to the momentous occasion in 2010.
More about King Charles III:
Prince William himself had previously shared his fond memories of the proposal. "It just felt really right out in Africa. It was beautiful," he had confessed during their first joint interview post-engagement.
Kenya's place in royal history
King Charles also reflected on Kenya's significant role in his family's history. He recalled how his mother, Queen Elizabeth, had ascended to the throne during a visit to Kenya in 1952.
"She arrived here a princess but left as Queen," King Charles said, expressing gratitude for the support Kenya offered during that challenging time.
Renewing ties with Kenya
In his speech, King Charles emphasized the importance of his visit to Kenya, a country that holds a special place in his family's heart.
"It means a great deal to my wife and myself that, in our coronation year, our first state visit to a Commonwealth country should bring us here to Kenya," he said, expressing pride in renewing the ties between the United Kingdom and Kenya.
In a touching end to his speech, King Charles expressed his deep connection to the country in Swahili, saying, "Today, I don't feel like a visitor."
