• Nicki Minaj has socked fans during a NYE performance
  • She slammed her song "Starships" as stupid
  • THIS is how she broke it all down

What a way to end one year and welcome another! In a jaw-dropping twist that had fans screaming, Nicki Minaj pulled the plug on her own hit "Starships" during a sizzling New Year's Eve performance at E11EVEN in Miami. Suddenly the music went out and the vibe was put on halt!

Nicki wasn't having it anymore

The crowd went into a frenzy when the rap superstar abruptly stopped the 2012 chart-topper, exclaiming, "Hold on. Psych, psych, psych, psych. I don't perform that song no more, y'all. I don't like it, what y'all want me to do? Stupid song."

The TikTok universe exploded with a video capturing the moment Minaj waved her hands, ditching "Starships" for the crowd-pleaser "Super Bass," igniting the audience with ecstatic cheers. This isn't the first time Minaj has thrown shade at her own hit; she confessed her dislike for the song back in 2020, questioning her past music choices.

Released in February 2012, the song debuted at No. 9 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 before reaching the No. 5 spot. Coming nearly a year after the success of Minaj’s “Super Bass,” “Starships” blended dance-pop and hip-hop to further Minaj’s crossover appeal. "Starships" reached the Top 5 in numerous countries, and as of 2024, it’s gone platinum nine times in the USA.

Even so, despite commercial success, Minaj has distanced herself from the song. During the 2020 Pollstar Live Conference in Los Angeles, Minaj said that she regretted making "so much of my discography. I wish I had never recorded [2014’s] ‘Anaconda.’ I like the video but ugh."

"My first ever solo song on Billboard was ‘Your Love.’ To this day, I like the video, but I hate the song," she continued. "I could go on and on. I hate ‘Starships.’ I mean, ew. Like, ‘Starships are meant to fly?’ I’m like, ‘Why did I do that?’ I really think that every time I hear it."

Even so, contracts are contracts. And the people want to hear their favorite Nicki anthem, even if she doesn't. Which begs the question: if she's making all that money from performing for fans, does she really have a choice? Either way, it looks like Nicki is really changing up her stance on her own music.

But fear not, Barbz! The "Moment 4 Life" singer has plenty of bangers to keep the party jumping. Another clip shows Minaj rocking the house with the very track, as the crowd belts out every word in unison.
