In 2015, many One Direction fans were heartbroken when Zayn Malik (30) decided to leave the band. The reasons for his exit were never communicated publicly, until now.
Zayn now speaks openly on the 'Call Her Daddy' podcast about his motivations at the time. "There were obviously problems in our friendship, too. We were together every day for five years and we were sick of each other," he admits.
Why Zayn Malik quit One Direction
In addition, there were some problems concerning the signing of contracts: "Certain people were doing certain things, certain people didn't want to sign contracts, so I knew something was happening," Zayn says.
After leaving the band, Zayn decided to start a solo career as a singer. This was not without ulterior motives. "I selfishly wanted to be the first to make my own record [...]. I really wanted to be the first to do my own thing," says the singer.
The other members of One-Direction also started their own careers - with more and less success.
