As the son of a policeman, Steve Guttenberg (61) knows his way around police work, which he takes for a ride in the Police Academy films. This - combined with his mischievous manner - was probably a reason to cast him in the role of "Carey Mahoney".
After the movies that made him a star almost overnight, he had some great success with family movies like Three Men and a Baby (with Tom Selleck) and in the critically acclaimed movie Cocoon.
But Guttenberg also did well in more serious projects and was highly praised for his work in the film The Day After. The film is about a nuclear war in the United States. Guttenberg also played a leading role in the classic Short Circuit!
Steve Guttenberg: Not only successful in front of the camera
Steve Guttenberg's work is not limited to film and television, critics also praise the stage work of the 61-year-old. In 2011 and 2012 he appeared in the Woody Allen production Honeymoon Hotel.
In addition there were predominantly positive reviews for the short film Gangs, which he produced. Steve Guttenberg has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which is located in front of - you've guessed it - a police station.
He is now a frequent guest star in various sitcoms and series and also took part in the 2008 season of Dancing with the Stars. However, he was eliminated from the show quite early. Guttenberg had a recurring role on The Goldbergs in 2019 and 2020.
Steve Guttenberg also gives back
Privately, Guttenberg is committed to helping young people who find it difficult to find their way into society after living in an orphanage and almost single-handedly founded a housing project.
He was married to model Denise Bixler for four years from 1988 until their divorce in 1992. He has been married to journalist Emily Smith since January of 2019.
