Rihanna and A$AP Rocky discussed changing the beauty industry in a special video they filmed for Vogue! As People shares, the two artists virtually got together for a fun rapid-fire Q&A session about all things related to appearance, beauty, and skincare.
Rihanna calls her skin type "as complicated as men"
Rihanna had A$AP Rocky star in the campaign for her new line of skincare, Fenty Beauty. And as it turns out, she had a cheeky response when he asked her what her skin type was! "My skin type is just as complicated as men are," Rihanna replied. "Y'all always try to say women are complicated [but] it's y'all!"
She also talked about her own personal journey with skincare, revealing the different ways she's struggled with her skin type. "Started from acne for sure all the way to sensitivity and melasma and being a Black woman with not knowing I need to use SPF," she explained. "I've learned a lot." As for A$AP Rocky, he described his skin type in one word: "handsome"!
A$AP Rocky feels beauty industry is "trying to evolve"
Rihanna also candidly expressed her views on how she would want to make the beauty industry more inclusive. "I wish the leaders of the beauty industry were a more diverse set of pioneers who have not just experienced the culture but have experienced a negligence in the industry whether it comes to their skin tone or skin type," she said.
"I feel like there's so many voids to be filled and we will only know that by the pioneers that have experienced those voids, and the lack of their representation in the industry." A$AP Rocky shared that he agreed with Rihanna in another Q&A video the two did together— this time, for GQ.
"I wish it was more versatility, diversity, obviously you know," he said. "I think it's kinda trying to evolve especially with a person like yourself. But I do wish that there was way more versatility." The rapper also mentioned that when he was growing up, he didn't feel he had any men to look up to in terms of being beauty icons.
Rihanna reveals her "concept of beauty" came from her mom
Rihanna took A$AP Rocky's comment as an opportunity to talk about why men can feel excluded from the beauty and skincare community. "Men love their skin and they take care of it," she explained, "but they feel obligated almost to only use products that are for men because anything beyond that seems like it's just too feminine."
As for Rihanna herself, she said that she and her siblings were influenced by their mom growing up, wanting to recreate her beauty! "My entire concept of beauty came from her. I wanted to dress like her. I wanted to look like her," Rihanna shared. "I wanted to do my hair like her. I wanted to do my makeup like her."
"My mother, my brothers, they had to have their nails clean, they had to be short, they had to be filed," she continued on. "My mother was that kind of woman and I think I've kind of adopted that point of view from her." Rihanna also recently shared why she hasn't released her new album yet, assuring fans it will be worth the wait. And from the sounds of it, it seems like she has a similar approach when it comes to precision in beauty!
