Former Oscar-winner Natalie Portman attended the 92nd Academy Awards as a presenter. She appeared onstage with Timothée Chalamet to present the award for Best Adapted Screenplay - which went to Taika Waititi for Jojo Rabbit.

During the Oscars red carpet arrivals, the Black Swan actress and her dress received attention for more than just their elegant style.

Natalie Portman wore Dior for the ceremony

Portman's Dior gown also featured a cape that was embroidered with the surnames of women directors who some believed were snubbed at this year's Academy Awards. The Best Director category featured five nominees, all of whom were men, with the award eventually going to Bong Joon-ho.

A closer look at Portman's dress

A closer look at her cape reveals names including "Scafaria," "Wang" and "Gerwig," referencing Lorene Scafaria (director of Hustlers), Lulu Wang (director of The Farewell), and Greta Gerwig (director of Little Women).

Little Women did receive nominations in six categories, but not for Gerwig's directing. The Farewell was a notable snub for Best International Feature Film, while Hustlers was also seen as a possible Best Supporting Actress nomination for Jennifer Lopez.

Gendered and racial inclusivity and diversity continue to be regular talking points during the awards show season. Recent controversies have included #OscarsSoWhite and this year's BAFTA's acting nominees all being white.

The Academy did take a small step forward this year, selecting a first ever non-English language film, Parasite, as Best Picture. Portman and many others are still seeking fair recognition for the accomplishments of women filmmakers, however.
