Kid Cudi is keeping it real when it comes to talking about mental health! The rapper recently opened up about how he has managed to cope with anxiety and depression in a new video that exclusively premiered on People.

As the outlet reports, the video is for Washington, D.C. PBS station WETA, and comes ahead of Kid Cudi's appearance in the Well Beings virtual town hall later this month.

Kid Cudi on mental health: "Anxiety and depression ruled my life"

Kid Cudi begins the video by talking about how he's struggled with his own mental health from a young age. "When we're young, we face a lot of pressure to do things that harm us," he says. "We pretend to be happy when there's a raging violent storm inside of our heart."

"Once it was difficult for me to find the words. Anxiety and depression ruled my life for as long as I could remember," Kid Cudi continued. "I was scared, I was sad, I felt like a damaged human swimming in a pool of emotions."

Kid Cudi shares what helps him cope: "I turn my pain into music"

Kid Cudi goes on to talk about how it wasn't easy to take control of his mental health issues. "I knew I deserved peace and to be happy, but I didn’t know how," he admits in the video. 

"It took me a while to get to this place of commitment, to say I'm gonna get through this. To know that we can take our pain and turn it into something." And for Kid Cudi, that "something" happened to be music. 

"I turn my pain into music," the rapper reveals. "And my music is how I am different. And my difference is my power."

Kid Cudi first talked about his anxiety and depression back in 2016

Kid Cudi openly admitted in 2016 that he was having difficulties with his mental health back in 2016. As People mentions, he shared a letter on Facebook revealing his struggle with anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. 

"I am not at peace," the rapper told fans in his letter. "My anxiety and depression have ruled my life for as long as I can remember and I never leave the house because of it … Its time I fix me. I’m nervous but I’mma get through this."

Kid Cudi to take part in virtual mental health town hall on July 14

Kid Cudi is doing better than ever these days when it comes to his mental health! "I have so much joy that I don’t feel like I’m fighting anymore," he told Billboard in 2018. "It was this year, around my birthday [in late January]. I’m the best I’ve ever been in my life.

"I realized I was genuinely happy, and there’s nothing really going on in particular," he explained. "Creating is making me happy again." As People shares, Kid Cudi just released a new song with Eminem on Friday, called "The Adventures of Moon Man & Slim Shady".

He is also set to take part in the Well Beings virtual town hall, which is hosted by the National Alliance on Mental Illness and WETA. The event will be livestreamed on wellbeings.org at 11 AM ET on July 14, featuring appearances from Ariel Winter, Billy Porter, Bill Pullman, Sean Astin, Alanis Morissette, and more.
