The Travolta family has been through a lot over the years.

Last summer, John Travolta and his kids tragically lost Kelly Preston to cancer at age 57. It's surely been a difficult time for the couple's children, and in a new interview, Travolta opened up about a heartbreaking talk he had afterward with his son Ben.

John Travolta's talk with son Benjamin after Kelly Preston died

Travolta shared the story this week in an interview with Kevin Hart. This is how the caring dad recalled the conversation with his 10-year-old son: "He said to me once, 'Because mom passed away, I'm afraid you're going to.'

"I said, 'Well, it's a very different thing.' And I went through the differences about my longevity and her limited life," Travolta explained.

"I said, 'But you know, Ben … you always love the truth and I'm going to tell you the truth about life. Nobody knows when they're gonna go or when they're going to stay.'

"Your brother [Jett] left at 16. Too young," he added. "Your mother left at 57. That was too young. But who's to say? I could die tomorrow. You could. Anybody can.

"So let's look at it like it's part of life. You don't know exactly. You just do your best at trying to live the longest you can."

Benjamin, 10, is the youngest of three children born to Travolta and Kelly Preston, who were married from 1991 until her death in 2020. Tragedy also struck the family in 2009, when their elder son Jett died at 16.

Travolta also recently shared the emotional preview of Kelly Preston's final film. The movie, titled Off the Rails, premiered in the UK last month, but it's unclear when it could get an expanded release.

July 12 marked the one-year anniversary of Preston's passing.
