This week it was everyone's favorite Australian that caught COVID. Hugh Jackman took to his Instagram on Tuesday to let his fans know that he had tested positive for the coronavirus. But all in all he seems to be in good spirits despite the news. Jackman is currently preparing his role in the upcoming production of The Music Man which will feature on Broadway this coming February.
"I just wanted to make sure you heard this from me. I tested positive for covid," the caption read. "Mild symptoms and looking forward to getting back on stage ASAP!"
Hugh Jackman Has COVID!
"My symptoms are like a cold - I have a scratchy throat and a bit of a runny nose, but I'm fine," Jackman says in the video.
Broadway has been deeply affected by the pandemic ever since the first lockdowns in March of 2020. Producers and performers were only able to return to the stage this summer with many eager to watch the next Tony Award-winning play. But it has been quite the balancing act between actors and understudies who fill in for them when someone falls ill.
Jackman recently paid tribute to understudies on Broadway after Kathy Voytko, Sutton Foster's understudy as "Marian Paroo" in The Music Man, filled in for Foster on short notice after Foster tested positive. "I'm emotional because it humbles me," he said. "Their courage, their brilliance, their dedication, their talent. The swings, the understudies, they are the bedrock of Broadway."
So far, nothing has been cancelled as a result of Jackman's diagnosis and in all likelihood he'll be just fine. Fans of the Aussie will be keeping their eyes peeled for any updates to his condition, but it looks like he'll be back on the stage in no time at all!
