Marie Kondo wants to help people make the best of their work from home situation! In an exclusive interview with People, the author and host of Netflix's Tidying Up with Marie Kondo shared some helpful advice on how to spark more joy— no matter where your office is.
As she shared with the magazine, Kondo herself has been running her company KonMari from home, as well as cooking, cleaning, and helping her husband take care of their two daughters. She's also currently on a Zoom interview book tour for her latest book, the appropriately titled Joy at Work! "I believe that fundamentally it’s the same whether you’re working in your work space at home or in your office," Kondo said in this week's issue of People.

Kondo gives advice on improving work from home lifestyle
Kondo stressed that there are certain key elements that need to be in place in order to allow for a more manageable work from home lifestyle. According to her, this includes building a healthy environment, having a set routine, and intentionally taking time to recharge.
She suggested people leave their bedrooms if it's possible, to "do something that signals the start of your work day," and possibly create some sort of ritual that signifies "shifting gears from private mode to work mode". While Kondo uses a quartz crystal and tuning fork, she says that even scented oils can act as this signifier.
Kondo also advocates for the importance of adding a "joy plus" piece to the work environment, which is a small token of some sort, and taking breaks within your schedule. "If you work from home, you tend to lose track of time," she explained. "Designate a time for a coffee or tea break. Step away use this time to fully disconnect and recharge".

Kondo's tips for an effective and distraction-free workspace
Kondo said another important thing to do when working from home is to keep the workspace itself organized and free from distraction. "Put only what’s essential on your work surface," she said. “This is extremely important and will allow you to focus on your work and minimize the time you are looking for the things you need".
Her minimalist work surface consists of only her computer, a charging pad, and a tray with small items. And since Kondo admitted that "mindless snacking" is "something I'm guilty of as well," she keeps snacks out of easy reach.
Marie Kondo shares how to manage kids' schedules at home
When it comes to working from home and dealing with kids, Kondo said that the important thing is to make a schedule for them, while also making them aware of your own schedule. Kondo explained that "whether it’s making breakfast together, reading or doing puzzles," a set schedule will give kids an idea of what to expect.
"When you’re designating a time for work, share your intention with your family members," Kondo advised. This way, she says, even young kids will know to respect this part of your schedule. "I try to close the office door when I’m working, but sometimes they will still knock really loudly and try to come in".

Kondo on tidying with her kids: "We make it a daily practice"
She also said that kids having tantrums is "quite natural", and explains what she does when her own kids have them. "I take the time to listen," Kondo shared. "Once they’ve calmed down, I ask them what’s bothering them and then, to let them know I understand, I say, ‘So that made you sad,’ or ‘That’s what you didn’t like.’ I try to honor their feelings".
Kondo also offered one last piece of advice that she's found works well for her... tidy up with your kids! She says that although her daughters are resistant to cleaning up themselves, "they will when I ask them to!" She explained that this has also become a part of her family's routine. "We make it a daily practice and tidy together at the end of the day," Kondo shared.
