Britney Spears could possibly have the freedom she's been seeking for years now that her father has taken new legal action! According to a new report from CNN, Jamie Spears formally requested to terminate his daughter's conservatorship on Thursday, surprising many who have been following the #FreeBritney movement.
Britney's prior court hearings taken into consideration with request
Britney has been under her conservatorship since February 2008, an arrangement which Jamie has had control over since that time. Back in June, Britney spoke out about the reality of her current situation during a court appearance made via phone. "I just want my life back," the singer pleaded at the time.
CNN shares that the court documents filed by Jamie reference Britney's comments on her conservatorship during recent hearings. The filing is said to mention that these proceedings "have called into question whether circumstances have changed to such an extent that grounds for establishment of a conservatorship may no longer exist."
Britney "should get that chance" to live outside of conservatorship, filing states
Britney has spoken out about the many restrictions imposed on her personal life due to living under the conservatorship, which include not being able to have another child. The document makes it clear that the singer "wants to live her life as she chooses without the constraints of a conservator or court proceeding," which would allow her to do everything from having a baby to spending money on her own terms.
Tuesday's court filing concludes by affirming that Jamie wants "what is best for his daughter," stating that Britney should be released from the conservatorship if he deems her fit. Whether or not Britney will continue to make music remains to be seen, since her manager recently suggested that the pop star will "officially retire." Regardless of this though, here's hoping that she will finally have her long-awaited freedom!
