Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani recently got engaged, and Shelton's approach to the proposal is said to have been very family-oriented! A source told Entertainment Tonight how the country singer involved Stefani's children and father throughout the process, wanting to uphold his now-fiancée's values.
Shelton said to be "very close" to Stefani's sons
Shelton has a good relationship with Stefani's kids— 14-year-old Kingston, 12-year-old Zuma, and 6-year-old Apollo— which is why he wanted to make them feel included in the special moment! "Blake is very close to Gwen's boys," the insider explained. "They talked it through and Blake made sure they were part of the excitement!"
And as it turns out, the ring Shelton proposed to Stefani with was a special one as well! "Blake had a custom-made engagement ring," the source shared. "He knows the designer and has used them in the past to make bracelets for Gwen."
Shelton asked Stefani's father for permission to marry
Shelton and Stefani had been dating for 5 years prior to their engagement, and Shelton wanted to make sure his proposal involved another important man in his partner's life! "Blake's plan to propose to Gwen began by asking her father for her hand in marriage," the source revealed to Entertainment Tonight.
"Gwen is very traditional so he truly felt that asking her father for approval was the proper thing to do," the insider continued. "And her father adores Blake. Gwen has been ready to tie the knot for a long time and Blake knew this was the perfect time." While Stefani only recently posted about the proposal on Instagram, Entertainment Tonight shares that it took place the weekend of October 17!
Shelton initially wanted to "take it slow" with Stefani
Shelton's thoughts on taking things to the next level with Stefani are said to have changed over quarantine. "Blake has been the one who wanted to take it slow in the beginning but recently he decided it was time," another source explained to Entertainment Tonight. "During the pandemic, they’ve had lots of downtime together and he truly saw the importance of spending life with the person you love."
And while Shelton didn't want to rush things, Stefani had her own reasons for waiting as well! "Gwen takes marriage very seriously and was disappointed that her first marriage [to Gavin Rossdale] didn’t work out," the source went on to say. "She wasn't in a hurry because she wanted to ensure Blake was ready." The two spent lots of time in quarantine at Shelton's Oklahoma ranch, which Stefani opened up about back in August!
"They both live incredibly busy lives and have managed to make sure they work together and spend as much time as they can together," the source explained. "The pandemic has given them both the time they needed to slow down and just appreciate and love each other."
Stefani recently admitted that she didn't know Shelton before the two worked together as coaches on The Voice, so it's thanks to the reality show that the couple ended up together as partners in love and life!
