The Golden Raspberry Awards is the negative equivalent of the Oscars. Annually, they even announce their nominees a day before the Academy Awards.
But one 2023 nomination is now causing a shitstorm. Child star Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who starred alongside Zac Efron in the movie Firestarter, has been nominated. Yet the actress is only 12 years old!
Did the Razzies cross the line with a child actor nomination?
Many feel that such criticism of a girl just starting her career is in extremely poor taste. Firestarter is an adaptation of Stephen King's novel of the same name and was not a big movie success.
Child star Justin Hilliard shared his opinion on Twitter: "The razzies are already mean-spirited & classless, but to nominate a kid is just repulsive & wrong... Why put a kid at risk of increased bullying or worse? Be better."

Another user on the platform wrote: "The Razzies are especially despicable for nominating a child actor."
But Armstrong is not the first child nominated for a Golden Raspberry. Macaulay Culkin is a three-time nominee for the Worst Actor award.
The Golden Raspberries respond to the controversy
Speaking to Buzzfeed, co-founder John Wilson said they decided to respect the award voters, and Armstrong is an "experienced actress, even if she's only 12."
However, he then backtracked some: "The intent was to be funny. In this particular instance, we seem to have misstepped very badly. I would admit that."
After the backlash, the Razzies rescinded the nomination and announced no future nominees under the age of 18...
