Tom Cruise's latest movie is proving to be a major triumph for the action star! As Deadline reports, the box office numbers for Top Gun: Maverick have been released, and the film is already performing exceptionally well across the board.
Top Gun sequel Cruise's highest-grossing debut
Top Gun: Maverick was originally planned to hit theatres summer 2020 prior to the coronavirus pandemic. However, the decision to release the film on Memorial Day weekend two years later appears to have worked in its advantage. In just four days, the sequel to the 1986 classic raked in $151 million, becoming the most successful Memorial Day release in years. And as the outlet shares, its box office success has been both domestic and international.
After just a few days, Top Gun: Maverick is said to have pulled in an impressive $248 million worldwide. These numbers officially make it Cruise's best performing debut weekend ever! And as The Independent mentions, it's also his first film in four decades to make over $100 million. Cruise's co-star Jennifer Connelly recently praised the actor, saying that he's "so exceptional" after working with him for the first time.

Top Gun: Maverick also features a brand-new ballad from Lady Gaga, and IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond has declared that the movie "heralds the return of the summer blockbuster." With Cruise's career soaring to new heights thanks to the Top Gun sequel, it's likely that his next big movie — the highly anticipated Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One — will also see box office success when it's released in 2023.
