Cruise introduced the trailer for Top Gun: Maverick inside the famous Hall H at the convention and also shared a few more details about the movie and his character "Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell", who is now an instructor at the fighter pilot school.
Tom Cruise: "It was my responsibility to really deliver for you."
In Top Gun: Maverick, Cruise will star alongside Miles Teller who portrays "Bradley Bradshaw", the son of "Maverick's" late co-pilot "Goose" (played by Anthony Edwards in 1986), as well as Jon Hamm, Ed Harris and Jennifer Connelly. Val Kilmer will also be part of the sequel, reprising his role of "Tom 'Iceman' Kazinsky".
Cruise told the raving crowd in San Diego that the film was to be "a love letter to aviation" and added "I was always asked, 'when are you going to do another one?' Well, you've been very patient with me. I felt like it was my responsibility to really deliver for you."
And deliver he did: have a look at the impressive first trailer below.

The movie was actually first scheduled to be released this summer, but had to be pushed back a year because director Joseph Kosinski needed more time to work on the flight sequences. Top Gun: Maverick is now due for release in June 2020.
