The creators of How I Met Your Mother, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas were originally inspired by their own friendship as well as their everyday lives in New York City. The character "Ted Mosby" is based directly on Craig himself. The story "Ted" tells his kids about all of his crazy experiences with "Marshall", "Lily", "Robin" and "Barney" in the series How I Met Your Mother is, without a doubt, legendary and is known as one of the most popular TV shows of the decade. It's hard to believe to believe that the plot was based on actual events.

Representing the ideal couple, "Marshall" and "Lilly" were both based of Craig Thomas and his wife Rebecca. Craig and Rebecca both studied at the University of Connecticut just like "Ted", "Marshall" and "Lily" did.
