The paranormal is about get animated — with a sense of humour, too.
On Aug. 28, TVLine reported news of an animated comedy spin-off of The X-Files, which is in development at Fox. Here's what's known so far about the series, titled The X-Files: Albuquerque.
The X-Files: No "Mulder" and "Scully" in new spin-off cast
Sadly, "Mulder" (David Duchovny) and "Scully" (Gillian Anderson) will not feature in the animated comedy. But, according to TVLine, the show promises to introduce an "office full of misfit agents who investigate X-Files cases too wacky, ridiculous or downright dopey for Mulder and Scully to bother with."
Original series creator Chris Carter is attached as an executive producer on the project. Writers from Netflix's Paradise PD are attached to script and produce the new series, while Gabe Rotter, a writer on Fox's most recent X-Files season, is on as another executive producer. As for network commitments, Albuquerque has "received a script and presentation commitment from Fox," TVLine says.
X-Files cast last assembled in season 11 on Fox in 2018
Previous X-Files spin-offs include Millennium, which aired for three seasons in the late '90s, and the short-lived The Lone Gunmen. In 2017, X-Files fans finally received two follow-up seasons to the show's initial nine-season run. Over the two seasons, Duchovny and Anderson reprised their roles for a total of 16 episodes.
While the pitch for Albuquerque departs from anything fans have seen before, it would make for a first project in the franchise since X-Files season 11 concluded in 2018. Albuquerque will be a title to keep in mind for X-Files diehards, too, seeing as it has the blessing of creator Chris Carter and could land at longtime X-Files home Fox.
