The Winds of War was an adaptation of Herman Wouk's book, following the "Henry" and "Jastrow" families during World War II. Real events are also depicted in the series, as are figures including Franklin Roosevelt, Adolf Hitler, and Benito Mussolini. The show was followed by a sequel, War and Remembrance, as well.
