The Ellen DeGeneres Show to be looked into by WarnerMedia
The Ellen DeGeneres Show will be undergoing internal investigation by a mass media conglomerate! As Variety and The Hollywood Reporter reported on Monday, WarnerMedia is going to look into the show's work environment.
Variety shares that a memo was sent to Ellen staff last week on behalf of Telepictures and Warner Bros. TV. The memo reportedly said that WarnerMedia's employee relations group would be engaged in the investigation, along with a third-party firm. Both current and past employees of Ellen are set to be interviewed!
Ellen's "toxic work environment" blasted in BuzzFeed article
The Ellen DeGeneres Show came under fire earlier on in the month after a report that was published by BuzzFeed News. In the report, ten past employees of the talk show as well as one current staffer claimed that there's a "toxic work environment" behind the scenes of Ellen.
They talked anonymously about their time on the show, with claims of racist remarks, fear of job security for bringing up issues, and even facing consequences for medical leave. The memo Variety mentioned reportedly cited recent articles as the cause of the investigation, which seemingly refers to the BuzzFeed report!
Ellen DeGeneres Show producers: "We are truly heartbroken"
The Ellen DeGeneres Show's executive producers— Ed Glavin, Mary Connelly, and Andy Lassner— released a joint statement in response to BuzzFeed. "Over the course of nearly two decades, 3,000 episodes and employing over 1000 staff members, we have strived to create an open, safe and inclusive work environment," they began their statement.
"We are truly heartbroken and sorry to learn that even one person in our production family has had a negative experience. It’s not who we are and not who we strive to be, and not the mission Ellen has set for us."
"For the record, the day-to-day responsibility of the Ellen show is completely on us," the producers went on to say. "We take all of this very seriously and we realize, as many in the world are learning, that we need to do better, are committed to do better, and we will do better." Hopefully the investigation that's set to take place will lead to positive changes behind the scenes at Ellen!
