'Taxi': What Happened To The Cast?

Now here's a classic you guys probably all remember! Taxi was a sitcom that aired on NBC and ran from 1978 until 1983. The show won a grand total of 18 Emmy Awards, including 3 for Outstanding Comedy Series. The series mainly revolved around the everyday lives of taxi drivers in New York, focusing a lot on the drivers themselves and their abusive dispatcher. We can tell you one thing though: a lot of these stars moved on to have glorious careers in acting!

"Bobby Wheeler," played by Jeff Conaway, is an optimistically naive, struggling actor whose occasional flamboyance leads to constant ridicule from "Louie". He does actually get on a soap opera called Boise during the show's lifecycle, but is quickly replaced.

Jeff Conaway left the show after the end of season 3, but continued to make guest appearances on the show throughout season 4. What followed for Conaway after his run on Taxi was several different cameos and guest roles on shows like Murder, She Wrote, George & Leo and Barnaby Jones. He also guest-starred in movies like Jawbreaker, Elvira, Mistress Of The Dark and Do You Wanna Know A Secret?. Sadly, due to an array of health problems from drug use, Conaway passed away on May 26, 2011, after his family decided to take him off of life support.

"Reverend Jim Ignatowski" was a washed-up character from the hit show Taxi who lives in his own little world. He was once a very intelligent student attending Harvard University, but after getting hooked on his first drug-related encounter, life took a downward spiral for him which led him to his position in the series...

Christopher Lloyd actually won an Emmy for his supporting role in Taxi as well as a Drama Desk Award and an Obie award for his role in Kaspar. He moved on to star in other major productions such as Back To The Future, Twenty Bucks, Cyberchase, I Am Not A Serial Killer and King's Quest Chapter V: The Good Knight. He currently lives in Montecito, California and appeared on NCIS in 2020.

"Latka Gravas" is an immigrant from some strange foreign country. He works as a mechanic fixing taxis for the company. "Latka" is often shown speaking some foreign language, which is mostly gibberish. His character is based on one of Andy Kaufman's comic characters, the "Foreign Man."

Kaufman was also a performance artist whose legend has only grown since the 1970s and '80s. He frequently appeared on late-night talk shows and experimented in the pro wrestling world, pioneering unconventional comedy styles such as "anti-humour". But Kaufman died of lung cancer just one year after Taxi ended in 1984, at age 35.

"Tony Banta," played by Tony Danza, is an unsuccessful, slow-witted boxer. At some point during the series, he gets his boxing license taken away for being knocked out too often.

Tony Danza was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best supporting actor for his performance in Taxi. He moved on to star in the hit series Who's The Boss, Baby Talk, The Tony Danza Show, Family Law, and The Practice. Watch for him in a voice role in the 2021 animated film Rumble.

Marilu Henner played "Elaine Nardo," the divorced mother of two who is struggling to make ends meet while pursuing a career in fine art.
