Smash may have been cancelled back in 2013, but now the Broadway-based show is getting new life as a brand-new musical! As People reports, Smash, A New Musical is currently under development, based on the television show that's remained a cult favourite to this day.

Smash musical to feature several characters from the show

Smash's theatrical adaptation will follow the basic plot of the television show, which centred on the creation of a fictional musical about Marilyn Monroe called Bombshell. While there haven't been many details released about the project as of yet, People has confirmed that several of the characters from Smash are expected to appear!

Bombshell's composing team of "Tom Levitt" and "Julia Houston" (played by Christian Borle and Debra Messing on the show) is set to feature in Smash, A New Musical, as are rival actresses "Ivy Lynn" and "Karen Cartwright" (played in the show by Megan Hilty and Katharine McPhee). It's unknown at this time if any of the original cast will be reprising their roles for the stage production.

Smash, A New Musical to see show's creatives return for the stage

Smash fans will be happy to know that the show's key creative team is on board for the development of the musical! According to People, producers Steven Spielberg, Robert Greenblatt and Neil Meron— as well as choreographer Joshua Bergasse— are all involved. Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman will return to write the score, and many of the songs they wrote for the show will be used.

Bob Martin and Rick Elice, both of whom are seasoned Broadway writers, have been tapped to write the book for Smash, A New Musical. The duo are currently working on co-writing a stage adaptation of fantasy movie The Princess Bride. Martin previously wrote the book for The Prom and The Drowsy Chaperone, while Elice was behind Jersey Boys, The Addams Family, Peter and the Starcatcher, and The Cher Show.

The exciting news comes just a day after People's one-night-only livestream of Bombshell in Concert. A benefit performance for The Actors' Fund that was filmed back in 2015, Bombshell in Concert featured the cast of Smash performing many iconic songs from the show, including "Let's Be Bad," "Don't Forget Me," and "Let Me Be Your Star."

Smash producer Spielberg: "Smash is near and dear to my heart"

Smash originally came about after an idea conceived by Spielberg, who expressed his enthusiasm for the show's development into a new theatrical production. "I am personally thrilled to be a part of this musical and its road to Broadway," he said in a statement that was obtained by People.

"Smash is near and dear to my heart, and it seems fitting that a new musical inspired by what we did on the show would eventually come to the stage. I’m beyond thrilled to be working with this incredible creative team and my producing partners, who began the ‘Smash’ journey with me over ten years ago."

Meron also commented on how everyone involved in Smash felt the show's transition to the Great White Way was a natural fit because of its songs. "We’ve all felt that Shaiman and Wittman’s incredible score for Smash belonged on Broadway," he added.
