Sean Penn's new movie Flag Day premiered in theatres over the weekend.
It's a rare directorial effort from Penn, who also stars in the film with his daughter Dylan. But the 61-year-old is now making headlines for the stance he's taking on who can see his film in theatres.
Sean Penn: No unvaccinated viewers at new movie Flag Day
This week, Penn chatted with talk show host Seth Meyers about the movie's run in theatres before it hits streaming services.
Penn is thrilled Flag Day is showing on the big screen, but he also had this to say to unvaccinated viewers planning to go see his film:
"As much as I want people all to go to the theatre, I really only want people who are vaccinated and safe to themselves and each other to go," Penn said.
After making the serious statement, Penn joked: "But most of the people who aren't vaccinated probably aren't interested in my movies anyway."
Meyers laughed and agreed with the mocking comment, saying: "That's a good point."
Penn's statement has expectedly been met with angry responses from anti-vaxx commenters, while others have lauded the actor for his public address to those unwilling to get the COVID-19 vaccine.
