Shawn Levy has opened up about working with Robin Williams on one of his last films! As Entertainment Tonight shares, a new clip for the upcoming documentary on Williams called Robin's Wish was released, and it sees Levy revealing he noticed the late actor struggling.
Levy says that "it was clear" something was up with Williams
Levy talked about his experience directing Williams in the 2014 movie Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, which was released the same year Williams died. "I would say a month into the shoot, it was clear to me -- it was clear to all of us on that set -- that something was going on with Robin," Levy says in the clip. "We saw that Robin was struggling in a way that he hadn't before to remember lines and to combine the right words with the performance."
The director went on to explain that he found himself having to reassure Williams in the midst of his struggle. "When Robin would call me at 10 at night, at two in the morning, at four in the morning, saying, 'Is it usable? Is any of this usable? Do I suck? What's going on?,' I would reassure him. I said, 'You are still you. I know it. The world knows it. You just need to remember that.'"
Robin's Wish to chronicle actor's neurodegenerative struggle
Levy said that he had a hard time watching Williams' decline. "My faith in him never left, but I saw his moral crumbling," he stated. "I saw a guy who wasn't himself and that was unforgivable." Williams tragically passed away at 63 years old after committing suicide.
Robin's Wish, which chronicles Williams' struggle with Lewy Body Dementia, is set to be released digitally and on demand on September 1. Directed by Tylor Norwood, the biopic was made in collaboration with Williams' widow, Susan Schneider Williams. And for fans of Williams who want to enjoy some lighter fare, the late actor's estate launched an official YouTube channel earlier this year that celebrates his life and career!
