• 'Hogan's Heroes' was a popular show
  • Robert Clary was the last surviving actor

It's been 60 years since Robert Clary first won fans as "Louis LeBeau" on Hogan's Heroes in the 1960s.

Since that time, all of the classic sitcom's original stars have passed on except Clary, who turned 95 years old in 2021. He survives today in the company of just one other Hogan's Heroes actor, Kenneth Washington, who played "Sgt. Richard Baker" in the show's last season.

Today, Clary is 95 and he's largely been retired from acting since the early 1990s. But he's still been giving interviews in recent years, sometimes even sitting down to talk Hogan's Heroes and his career.

Clary is also one of the ever-diminishing numbers of Holocaust survivors alive today. Lately, he's been speaking about his experiences as a survivor, having endured multiple years in Nazi concentration camps in his late teenage years. He was liberated from Buchenwald in 1945 but lost many family members in the genocide.

In 2018, Clary told Television Academy Foundation of his initial reluctance as a younger man to speak about his experiences as a Holocaust survivor, but he described it as "a duty" for survivors to teach people about the history.

Clary has spent decades and travelled the world speaking as a witness and warning of the extremes of hatred and inhumanity. "They have to know how terrible it is and try to find a better way to be human beings," he said.

In 2020, Clary also shared his life story in a new documentary titled From the Holocaust to Hollywood: The Story of Robert Clary. This year, the Holocaust Education Film Foundation released a DVD of Clary's new film.
