Riverdale season 4 just premiered last night and as we were expecting, it was not disappointing at all, in fact, the first episode of the new season was quite emotional as it paid tribute to the late actor Luke Perry ("Fred Andrews"), who passed away in March 2019.
Let's catch up on what has happened: While the whole town starts to get ready to celebrate the 4th of July and the core four are planning a camping weekend, "Archie's" (KJ Apa) phone rings and it is evident that something is completely wrong. Then "FP" (Skeet Ulrich) explains that while "Fred" was on his way back from Cherry Creek he decided to pull over to help someone whose car had stalled on the road, but unfortunately while he was doing that, another car came around a curve very fast and strucked him, killing him.
"Archie" has a very revealing dream. Can he talk to ghosts?
The news were quite shocking and it seems that at first "Archie" could not react as expected, as he only focuses on the fact that they have to catch the person who did it, but then he realizes that they have some important decisions to make like planning "Fred's" service, which has to be after July 4th due to the fact that nobody can drive "Fred's" body back to Riverdale until the 5th.
Then the group of friends share fond memories about the fabulous "Fred" and surprinsingly, that night "Archie" has a quite revealing dream where his dead grandpa asks him where his father is, bringing up the idea that "Archie" can actually "talk" to ghosts, and suggesting that he could eventually talk to "Fred."
Shannen Doherty, Luke Perry's former BH90210 co-star makes a guest appearance
Later on we get to learn that "Archie" is allowed to take his dad's body, but apparently he is not ready to do that, so "Betty" (Lili Reinhart) and "Veronica" are the ones who actually confirm it's "Fred" before gathering his belongings. Then while "Archie", "Jughead" (Cole Sprouse), "Betty" (Lili Reinhart), and "Veronica" (Camila Mendes) are heading out to retrieve "Fred’s" truck, they see a car pulling up and a woman (Shannen Doherty) holding a bouquet of flowers stepping out of it. Who is she? Apparently she’s the woman "Fred" saved in his final moments! Then she apologizes to "Archie" and explains that one of her tires blew and she was stranded before "Fred" showed to help her. It was definitely one of the most revealing parts of season 4 premiere episode!
Later on "FP" calls "Archie" to let him know that they have found the guy responsible for the hit and run, who apparently confessed. Then "Archie" is 100% sure about taking justice but unfortunately he finds out that it was not that guy's fault and he is actually covering his teenage son who does not have a driver's license and reportedly took his dad's car without permission.
THIS was the most emotional part of Riverdale season 4 premiere episode
Later on "FP" meets "Archie" and takes him to a very special thing "Cheryl" (Madelaine Petsch) planned: the town's 4th of July epic parade turned into a special parade for "Fred" where people were holding "Welcome home, 'Fred'" signs. Then "Fred's" service starts and "Archie" gives a emotional speech about how his dad helped build Riverdale: "He’s the greatest man I’ve ever known. It hurts me that I never got to say goodbye, that I won’t get to see him again or talk to him. But his spirit and his memory lives on, in this town, in everyone he’s never met."
Season 4 premiere episode wraps up with everyone gathering at "Archie's" backyard who finally says: "Imagine if everyone was even half as good as my dad was,” before finally breaking down. "Fred" will always be part of Riverdale, such as the fabulous Luke Perry will be.
